Counsellor, Educator, Leader, and Builder

Rick Johal

Rick Johal

I am a psychotherapist with a Master of Social Work from the University of British Columbia, with many years of experience in mental health, substance use, behaviour change, and professional learning.

Alongside my private counselling practice, I serve as the Director for Learning and Development with BC Mental Health and Substance Use Services (BCMHSUS), where I support learning, practice development, and large-scale workforce education across complex healthcare environments. That work has deepened my understanding of how people grow, how systems shape behaviour, and how meaningful change often requires both personal insight and practical support.

My counselling approach is collaborative, grounded, and respectful. I draw from evidence-based approaches and bring particular depth in Motivational Interviewing, mental health and substance use practice, and conversations that support meaningful change. I aim to create a space where people feel understood without judgment and supported in finding a way forward that fits who they are.

I am also deeply passionate about building. In recent years, that passion has expanded into full-stack software development, where I have been learning to design and create digital tools that support learning, reflection, and human development. I am especially interested in the intersection of mental health, education, communication, and technology, and in building practical tools that help people strengthen real-world skills and create positive change.

In addition to counselling, I am a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) and offer Motivational Interviewing workshops for teams that want stronger conversations with clients, customers, or colleagues. I am also trained in Invitation to Change through CMC: Foundation for Change.

At the core of all of my work—whether in counselling, leadership, teaching, or building new tools—is a commitment to helping people and organizations grow in ways that are thoughtful, effective, and aligned with what matters most.
